I've decided to build something for the One Page Game Jam 2024: https://itch.io/jam/one-page-rpg-jam-2024

My intention is the create a full fledged generic fantasy RPG. Yes this idea has been heavily overdone and is probably played out. I'm going to do it anyway and I'll try to track progress in this forum. My initial idea is to use a bunch of the cool ideas I've seen in other RPGs  and combine them into this one pager.

I'm taking inspiration and influences from the following games

Sword & Backpack. In Sword & Backpack you use opposed D20 rolls and attempt to defeat a monsters by winning roll offs against them. Both the players and the monsters have a Defeat number associated with them. So a D:4 monster can lose 4 roll offs before they are defeated. I think players have a base Defeat Number of 5. 

Shadow of the Demon Lord. Mostly the Boon and Bane dice. This concept is that you roll a D20 plus any number of D6 dice and choose the best D6 to add to your D20 roll for a Boon, or choose the highest D6 to reduce your D20 roll for a Bane. 

Helm. For the locations/abilities concept. In Helm each location has a D6 number associated with it and a number of Hit Points that location can take before you get knocked out.

So far what I've discovered after a few weeks, a bunch of pages of handwritten notes and 3 versions of digital rules is this: there are WAY more cool ideas out there than is going to be allowed in this format. 

Having identified this problem, I'm going to have a restart. I have neither the time nor design space to bring in all the cool ideas and concepts that I want to shove in there. I'm going to refocus to consolidating my core ideas and start small and tight then see what cool stuff I can add if there is space for it.
